 Aimee Michelle

Our HomeStar Insurance Services Customer Service Representatives recently shared what their most frequently asked Auto and/or Home Insurance questions were.

According to Aimee of our Manteno branch, Michelle of our Bourbonnais branch and Rhonda of our Bradley branch, here are the top 5 Auto and Home Insurance questions:

    *  Does my home policy cover flood damage?
A homeowners insurance policy does not cover loss by Flood to your dwelling or your contents, whether or not you are in a flood plain.  Flood coverage must be purchased under a separate Flood Insurance policy that will strictly cover losses from flood to your dwelling and contents.

    *  Why should I schedule my jewelry?  Isn't it already covered under my homeowners policy?
Homeowners insurance policies only offer limited coverage for jewelry.  Most policies offer a blanket limit for jewelry with a maximum amount for one item, for example $2,500 limit with $500 per item maximum.  Jewelry coverage on a homeowners policy also typically only covers your jewelry for the perils that are covered in your policy, so if you lose a the diamond from your ring, it is not covered unless the item is specifically scheduled for all peril coverage.

    *  Do I have to add my teenager to my auto policy if he/she only has their drivers permit?
No, you do not have to add your teenager to the policy, but it's always a good idea to give us the youthful driver information so we can note on the file that he/she has their permit.  Some companies will even allow us to add the unlicensed member of the household to the policy.  There won't be any additional premium charged until he/she becomes a licensed driver.

    *  What is the difference between the Dwelling amount of coverage vs the Market Value of my home?
On homeowner policies we are insuring your property for the full "replacement" of the home.  Insurance carriers are constantly updating the replacement estimators each year to make sure that our clients are protected correctly.  Your Dwelling amount gives you coverage based on a total loss of the home like a fire.  This coverage is the amount you would need to rebuild your home at today's prices.  Market Value is the price at which you could sell your home.

    *  Why did my insurance premium increase when I haven't had a claim with my insurance carrier?
The insurance industry has taken a huge hit over the past few years with weather catastrophes and the carriers have to raise their rates across the board to help ease the financial strain of the increased catastrophes.

If you have any other questions about your auto, home, RV, business, life or health insurance, feel free to contact any of our experienced Customer Services Representatives at our Kankakee, Bradley, Bourbonnais or Manteno locations.
